We look forward to contributing to children's increased knowledge of what is found in the sea. Many will be surprised by what is actually found on the shore and in the sea.

So says Kamilla Nystad, head of the department for leisure visits at the Science Center in Trondheim.

The Science Center is one of Trondheim’s most popular attractions for children, young people and families. Since 1988, the experience center has been dedicated to promoting interest in science through playful exhibitions and experiences. At the Children’s Seafood Festival, the Science Center visits the seafood market at Clarion Hotel Trondheim to display sea creatures before they are served on a plate.

Some children have a limited understanding of fish and sea animals, especially when it comes to observing and interacting with them. At the Children’s Seafood Festival, children can observe sea animals before they are used for food, and learn about their habitats and behavior, according to Nystad.

Fun in the lab
The science center will bring a portable marine mini-lab to the Children’s Seafood Festival. Children can use the microscope to explore small crawling insects from the shore, which will appear much larger under the microscope.

– We believe in interactive activities where children can try, explore, touch and examine animals. At the Children’s Seafood Festival, kids get to learn about sea urchins, seaweed, snails, and crayfish in a fun and interactive way. It is by no means only the little ones who are captivated by these activities. According to Nystad, adults can be just as enthusiastic.

Additionally, the kids can engage in a detective game and identify diverse sea creatures by examining the DNA sequences specific to each species. The activity “DNA detective” is suitable for all ages and allows children to get to know the varied diversity of species in Trøndelag.

-Trondheim is completely unique in the world in terms of access to various marine animals, both on the shore and further out to sea, including the cold-water coral reefs along the Trøndelag coast, Nystad states.

The science center collaborates with NTNU and receives assistance from biology students at the festival.

-Thanks to our partnership with NTNU, we can offer children and adults these unique experiences during the Children’s Seafood Festival, concludes Nystad.
